About the powder

What is organic yellow curcumin powder 70g?

Curcumin is the yellow pigment of turmeric (Curcuma longa), a plant in the ginger family. The part used is the rhizome, the knobbly underground stem usually called turmeric root, which is deep orange inside. Turmeric grows in hot, humid tropical regions, above all in India and Southeast Asia, where it has been a kitchen spice and a dye for centuries.

This powder is listed on the label as extract of turmeric root. It has a bright yellow-orange colour and a warm, slightly bitter flavour, so a little goes a long way. Curcumin dissolves in fat rather than water, which is why the colour spreads most evenly when the powder is first stirred into warm oil, butter or milk. It is the classic colour of golden lattes, yellow rice and curries, and gives cakes and breads a sunny yellow crumb.

Starting points only: colour and taste vary with the recipe. Add more a pinch at a time, as large amounts taste bitter.

FAQ

Organic yellow curcumin powder 70g FAQ

Can’t find your answer? Email info@theorganiclabs.com.

What does curcumin powder taste like?

It has a warm, slightly bitter taste. In small amounts, as in a latte, rice or a cake, the flavour stays in the background and mostly the colour comes through. Larger amounts make the bitterness noticeable, so add it gradually.

What is the difference between curcumin and turmeric?

Turmeric is the plant, Curcuma longa, and its ground root. Curcumin is the yellow pigment in that root, which gives turmeric its colour. This powder is a curcumin extract, so it is stronger than ground turmeric: start with a small amount.

What can I use curcumin powder for?

Curries, dals, soups, rice, tofu or egg scrambles, marinades, dressings, golden lattes, smoothies and baking. It mainly adds a bright yellow colour, with a warm, slightly bitter note that grows with the amount.

Can I bake with curcumin powder?

Yes. Sift ½–1 tsp per 250 g flour into the dry ingredients for a yellow crumb in cakes, muffins, bread and pancakes. Keep baking soda to what the recipe needs, as an alkaline batter turns the yellow reddish-brown.

How do I stop curcumin powder from clumping?

Stir it into a little warm oil, melted butter or milk to a smooth paste first, then add the rest of the liquid. In dry mixes, sift it together with the flour or other dry ingredients.

Does curcumin powder stain?

Yes. The yellow pigment marks fabric, wooden boards, plastic containers and fingers. Wipe spills straight away, mix it in glass, ceramic or stainless steel bowls, and rinse cloths and utensils soon after use.

Where do you ship from?

From Sweden. Orders placed by 14:00 ship the same day, and delivery takes 1–3 days in Sweden and 3–6 days in the EU. Shipping is free on retail packs over €75.
